Duke Karl Insulting the Corpse of Klas Fleming, 1878, oil on canvas by Albert Edelfelt, Swedish-speaking Finnish artist of genre and historical scenes. The Duke’s passions stun the small funeral audience.
The dead man was Clas Eriksson Fleming, a high-ranking Swedish official, whose loyalties were with Sweden’s legitimate king. Duke Karl was Regent Duke Charles, later King Charles IX, still angry because of political differences.
This painting is in the Athenaeum art museum in Helsinki, Finland.
