A Child’s Funeral, 1879, oil on canvas by Albert Edelfelt, Finnish, 1854-1905.
Members of this child’s family gaze away from each other in silence attesting to the power of water to calm in times of trouble. All are lost in their own thoughts and grief. This painting is reminiscent of Irish artist Matthew Lawless’s, The Sick Call of 1863.
Edelfelt was founder of the Realist movement in Finland and one of the first Finnish artists to achieve international fame.
