1.  Jour de Morts (Day of Death) by Carlos Schwabe, German-born Swiss artist, 1866-1926.   Affected at a young age by the death of a friend, many of Schwabe’s paintings are about pain and dying. The model here is his wife and, if we look closely, that is certainly Schwabe’s tombstone.   Schwabe studied with Joseph Mitty in the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and met Symbolist painters under whose influence his style began to form. He illustrated many books including the Jardin de l’infante by Albert Samain and Les Fleurs du Mal by Baudelaire.
