The Lady of Shalott, 1872, by Arthur Hughes, 1832-1915, British artist and illustrator. Here he offers a visual for Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem of the same name. This oil on canvas is in a private collection.
“Out upon the wharf they came,
Knight and burgher, lord and dame
And round the prow they read her name
The Lady of Shalott.”
The Lady of Shalott was a favorite image of artists of the time. Hughes completed 750 illustrations of books during his life. He also illustrated Tennyson’s Enoch Arden and Thomas Hughes’s Tom Brown’s School Days. The two Hughes men were not related.
